Cat of the Week: Shaz

This week, we’re excited to introduce Shaz, an excellent Siamese cat in need of a new home. Shaz is a 9-year-old male whose original person had health problems and could no longer care for him. Shaz’s dad wants everyone to know that he is a great cat and an excellent friend. He also enjoys hanging out with the ladies, and we’re pretty sure they enjoy hanging out with him too, because he is super handsome! This gentleman will make a terrific companion for some lucky person.

This week we’re happy to introduce a handsome gentleman named Cruelli. He is seven years old and is gray and white—and check out the cute little dark boops on his nose! This friendly, sweet fellow is a lot of fun and enjoys conversation with just about anyone. Cruelli is an awesome cat who is a staff favorite, so we know he will bring a lot of life to some lucky adopter’s home.

This week, we’re pleased to introduce this black-and-white beauty named Laila. Laila is an 8-year-old female who is described as a sweet lady. She is into head rubs and lounging on comfy cat beds. We love the pattern of her coloring, how her face is almost pure black from the chin up and white below that. So pretty! Someone out there will be really lucky to invite this lady into their home.

Today we’re introducing a big, handsome fellow who is sure to steal someone’s heart. Leo is a male tabby who is 8 years old. He is a cat of stature, and by that we mean he is not small. This guy weighs in at 24 pounds and is a total cutie. Leo is very sweet and loves getting attention. We know he’ll make a great companion for someone!

Cats of the Week: Barry and Bear Kitty

Today we are pleased to introduce two cats: Barry, an orange-and-white tabby who is 7 years old, and Bear Kitty, a brown-and-black tabby who is just a few days short of 7 years old. Barry is quiet and is quite shy, but he might open up and be his own cat in a home environment. He enjoys lounging in a comfy bed and watching people. Bear Kitty is an adventurous guy, so we think life with him would not be boring. He can be shy when he first meets someone, but he likes getting head rubs. He also loves looking out a window to keep track of all the birds and squirrels.

These guys would so love to get out of the shelter and into a loving home. They’re not listed as a bonded pair, so they don’t have to be adopted together.

Cats of the Week: Sampson and Mittens

 This week we have not one but two great cats: Sampson and Mittens. They are a bonded pair and must be adopted together. 

Sampson is the senior kitty of the pair. He is an 8-year-old male and has a lovely medium-length coat. Mittens, a black-and-white female, is younger—just 5 years old. They both enjoy joining their peeps for an evening of watching TV. They also enjoy looking out the window to watch whatever’s happening outside. Sampson and Mittens are both front declawed. They just can’t wait to find a new family to call their own!

Today we’re pleased to introduce this lovely gray tabby with white bib and socks. Her name is Iris, and she is 8 years old. She’s kind of shy and was scared in the shelter environment, but now she’s at Charm Kitty Café, where we hope she’ll meet lots of great people who can help her feel less scared so she’ll be ready for her forever home. Iris will need a patient adopter to give her time to adjust and feel comfortable in a new home. Could that be you?

Today we’re featuring a great cat we’ve introduced you to once before. Ronak is a 9-year-old gentleman who is front declawed. He has gorgeous black-and-white coloring, and such a handsome face! He enjoys getting attention, especially head rubs, but he is not shy about telling you when he’s had enough. He likes to hang with his peeps while they watch TV or whatever. Ronak also enjoys playing with toys like feathers and wands, and he has lived in a home with a young child before.

We understand he was a little shy when he first arrived at Baltimore’s Charm Kitty Café, where he currently is. But thanks to all the visitors he’s met since then, he’s become even more playful and ready for his new forever home (this according to Charm Kitty’s Instagram account). This is a reminder to all of us that visiting cat cafes isn’t just fun for you—you’re also helping socialize the cats so they’ll be ready to wow their potential adopters.

Kids’ Cruelty Toward Mother Cat and Kittens Points to Need for Humane Education

Warning: This story includes two brief accounts of cruelty toward animals.

This mother cat and her kittens were pelted with rocks, but thanks to their
kind rescuer and Alley Cat Rescue, the mom and her surviving kittens
are recovering and will be available for adoption soon.

In late May, a kind person in Maryland witnessed some children throwing rocks at a tortoiseshell cat and her four kittens. Fortunately this person intervened, rescuing two of the kittens. But the other two kittens had died, and the mother had run away.

The kind person then called Alley Cat Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to the welfare of cats. ACR took over care of the kittens and sent rescuers out the next day to search for the momma. They found her near where the incident had taken place. She was under a car and was likely searching for her kittens. The rescuers were able to humanely trap her, and she is now recovering in foster care along with her two remaining little ones. Understandably, the little family has been shaken by what happened to them, but they are getting better and will soon be available for adoption.

The momma’s new name is June Bug, and her kittens are Star and Boo. We hope they all soon learn that many humans are kind and loving and would never, ever try to hurt a defenseless cat.

The importance of humane education

We’re so happy that June Bug, Star, and Boo were rescued and are recovering, but this story makes us ask, Why do people do stuff to intentionally hurt animals? Old SoLT has been asking this since she was about 12, when she briefly witnessed some older teens throwing rocks at a puppy. She didn’t understand it then, and she doesn’t understand it now. How anyone could see any living thing suffering and not have their heart break is beyond us.

According to ACR, “cruelty towards animals can be an indicator of other behavioral problems in children and continued criminal activity in adulthood.” One problem, wethinks, is that often people—adults and children alike—don’t understand that, yes, animals feel pain and fear. Yes, animals deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. That’s why we’re so glad to know that ACR advocates for humane education—teaching children to be kind and compassionate to animals.

“It is so important to teach children compassion for animals at a young age, while they are so impressionable,” said Denise Hilton, Alley Cat Rescue’s director of operations. ACR has taught humane education courses at elementary schools and Girl Scout events. Hilton said, “When we have taught at local schools the children have been really engaged and interested in learning more about cats.”

That is good to hear!

We applaud ACR's humane education initiatives and hope they can do a lot more of it.

Phil is a 12-year-old male who could make a great cat for fans of orange tabbies. His hobbies are, appropriately, “doing cat things” like lounging and playing, and he enjoys getting pets sometimes too.

Cat of the Week: Oliver

Today we’re featuring a cat we have featured before. Oliver is an 8-year-old gentleman who is so sweet and laid-back and loves getting attention. He also enjoys cat beds, watching birds, and playing with catnip. He thinks food is pretty awesome too!

Oliver is a diabetic kitty who needs to get insulin shots twice a day. Some people are reluctant to adopt a cat with diabetes, so he needs someone really special to give him a new forever home. Maybe some people are just afraid of having to give a cat shots, but it is so easy to learn and do. Even old SoLT has done it, on her mom’s old cat (who, by the way, lived many happy years while on insulin). Oliver is really good about getting his shots too.

Oliver is currently in a foster home and is adoptable through the Baltimore Humane Society. He first came into the shelter way back in December 2015 (that’s been years, people!). Wouldn’t it be great to see him settled into a new forever home?

Today we are excited to introduce the lovely little China. She is a 13-year-old lilac Tonkinese mix. China prefers a quiet atmosphere and is having some trouble relaxing in the shelter environment (you might notice she looks scared in her photo). She enjoys having her soft fur rubbed, and she loves being carried around. She has lived with another cat before but would also be happy as an only cat. Wouldn't it be great to see this beautiful lady's frightened look transform into a contented one? Let's help her find a nice quiet home where she will be loved and enjoy life again!
